Stratum

The stratum value is calculated from the number of computers in the NTP hierarchy to the time reference. The time reference has a fixed stratum value n (usually stratum 0) and each subsequent computer in the NTP chain has a stratum value n+1. There are 16 stratum values (strata) defined, where stratum-16 is used to indicate that the stratum value is undefined, or the node is unsynchronized or unreachable.
