The Precision Time Protocol (PTP) which is defined in the IEEE1588 – 2002 standard allows precise synchronization in networks like e.g. Ethernet. By using hardware generated time stamps in the data packets an accuracy within the nanosecond range can be achieved. Such precision is needed in measurement and control networks as well as in research environments. The Institute of Embedded Systems (InES) of the University of Winterthur is addressing the practical implementation and application of PTP. MEINBERG developed a PTP capable time server in cooperation with InES.
