LANTIME M300/GLN
NTP Time Server with integrated GPS/GLONASS satellite receiver

The LANTIME M300/GLN is a time server with a combined GPS/GLONASS satellite receiver and has been designed to synchronize NTP and SNTP compatible clients (servers, workstations, embedded devices) in IP based networks. The optional input/output interfaces available for this LANTIME M300 model are accessible via rear panel connectors, offering a large selection of time synchronization and reference frequency signals to form a central source of time and frequency synchronization in addition to its network time server function.

GPS/GLONASS satellite clock

The combined GPS/GLONASS satellite receiver clock has been designed to provide extremely precise time. It has been developed for applications where conventional radio clocks cannot meet the growing requirements for precision and stability. High precision availability for mission critical applications that need to be running 24/7 while being fully independent of the geographical position is the key function of this system. The M300/GLN synchronizes its clock by receiving time information from the satellites of the Russian GLobal Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) and the U.S. operated Global Positioning System (GPS).

GLONASS has been introduced to provide real-time position and velocity determination, initially for military applications. After a modernization program launched in 2002, the GLONASS general availability for civil users and its restored reliability present the Russian system as a globally accessible alternative to GPS. GLONASS satellites transmit two types of signals: a Standard Precision (SP) signal and an obfuscated High Precision (HP) signal, which is encrypted and reserved for military applications.

Description
NTP Time Server with integrated GPS/GLONASS satellite receiver

The GNU/Linux operating system of the LANTIME has been optimized to ensure a high level of security and reliability.

A large LC display shows the state of the internal GPS/GLONASS receiver and the NTP subsystem. Three LEDs (green/red) indicate the status of the three main components: Reference Time (GPS only, GPS+GLONASS, GLONASS only), Time Synchronization Service (NTP) and Network (Link status). A fourth red LED is labeled ALARM and can be configured to signal any event that is covered by the notification handling routines.

The configuration of the system can be done by using a standard web browser for accessing the extensive but straightforward web based interface. Alternatively a text based and menu driven setup utility can be started from the shell prompt after logging into the unit via serial console, Telnet or SSH.

The security-related features of LANTIME time servers satisfy highest demands. The time synchronization data can be reliably signed and secured by symmetric keys (MD5) and the NTP autokey procedures. This protects the clients against manipulated time and man-in-the-middle attacks and allows them to verify that the NTP packets they received were send by the LANTIME. Additionally the whole LANTIME configuration can be done by using encrypted channels (e.g. SSH, HTTPS or SNMPv3). Every unused/unneeded protocol can be disabled in order to reduce possible points of attack.

In order to support network management systems the LANTIME time servers offer an extensive SNMP interface, which can be accessed by SNMP V1, V2.c and V3. It allows the monitoring of all relevant system parameters (including operating system parameters, network interface statistics, detailed GPS and NTP status information as well as the complete system configuration) and can be used to alter the LANTIME configuration via SNMP set commands, too.

LANTIME time servers are designed to be deployed in IPv6 networks, the NTP time synchronization as well as the configuration interfaces (Web-based, SSH and SNMP) comes with IPv6 support. You can assign several IPv6 addresses and the system supports automatic configuration by IPv6 autoconf.

The LANTIME M300/GLN is equipped with a high precision oscillator "TCXO" (look at oscillator options for details) as standard. The oscillator determines the holdover characteristics (e.g. when the satellite signals are disturbed or jammed). Several oscillator options can be ordered for applications with higher accuracy needs or more demanding holdover requirement .

A standard coaxial cable with 50 ohm impedance can be used to connect the antenna to the receiver. The maximum length of cable between antenna and receiver depends on the attenuation factor of the used coaxial cable.

Because of its modular system architecture it is possible to equip a LANTIME M300 time server with a number of different reference time sources. Optionally several additional frequency-, serial string- and pulse outputs are available and by combining two (even different) time sources and redundant power supplies, high-availability systems are no problem.
